Good morning bloggers.
When my wife and I first moved to the Rochester, NY area, we had a nasty wind storm. It was back in 2017. March 8th to be exact. They actually call it "The Great Rochester Wind Storm Of 2017" They call it this because of the amount of damage it caused. We recorded category one hurricane force winds in the Rochester area that day. Trees literally uprooted all over. Power lines down all over. I'm reminding you all of this because many of us saw downed trees along with other damage. My wife and I had two medium sized trees fall in our yard. I remember that much of the city lost power. I got sent home from work early. I remember driving through the city watching things blow across the roads and highways. The street lights swinging like something from a movie. And I remember coming home to this.
Considering the amount of damage that was seen across the city, my wife and I actually got off lucky. Home Depot was packed. Everyone trying to buy chain saws ect. Myself being one of those people.
We went on to have another wind storm after that. However the damage seen above was luckily not the case the second time around.
Now fast forward to around two or three weeks ago and there was yet another fallen tree in my backyard. This time it was much much bigger! But also this time, not wind related.
This one fell because it started to rot at the bottom of the tree. (I was not aware of this at the time). I say it wasn't wind related because we didn't have any major winds that night. A stray breeze yes. But that's about it. So I spent the next five days cutting and hauling this bad boy out of my yard. Keeping the nice healthy wood for fire wood later on.
What's my point to all this wind and falling tree talk? Well, every time we have the chance at gusty winds now I get a little nervous. With good reason I think! And that's what we have in the forecast heading into Wednesday and Thursday. I noticed the chance for this storm approaching last week. I gave my wife notice and we're about as ready as we can be. Part of that tree pictured above is still standing. (It is my neighbors tree). Now every wind storm we have I'm always worried the rest of it will come down.
Take a look at the system I'm talking about below.
I know this map is a little hard to see / understand what is going on. However if you look at the two areas I have outlined in Red, you will see the precipitation and those tightly packed isobars. That is what I will be watching closely over the next two days. Inside those isobars we are expecting winds between 20 and 30 mph. Occasionally gusting anywhere from 40 to 50 mph.
This is a big deal. We have a lot of sand in areas on northern Rochester. My backyard has quite a bit actually. Which means that things such as trees, don't root very well. Making the possibility of them falling even grater. Add in rain to soften up the ground and it just makes things worse. Am I saying that fallen trees are a guarantee? no of course not. But I wouldn't be surprised if it happens either.
